Desperate Help Needed – Please Read and Spread the Word

Today was the best of days and the worst of days. I got to shoot a wedding today for the best couple ever Hailey and Nic. Over the past few months we have become so close we are like family so today I was so excited for their wedding. A fellow photographer and instant friend Heidi Walker of Heidi J Photography was kind enough and so excited to come and second shoot for me today. We instantly hit it off and she is just the sweetest photographer i’ve met and we joked back and forth together all afternoon. Well as many of you have heard, there have been many camera thefts around the temple from LOW LIFES that will follow the photographers from the temple, and if they stop at a store with their gear in the car, the slimeballs will rush in and steal all of the photographers gear. Thanks SO much news media for advertising to the world how much our gear is worth so the thieves now know to target us. ;)

Anyways, Long story short, Heidi got all of her gear stolen and it makes my heart ache. Read all about it on her BLOG. This was her passion and she lost everything, she invested so much more than the $20,000 in gear that was stolen. She invested time, invested money into numerous workshops, into education and learning editing skills, program skills. Then some D-Bag comes and takes it all away from her. Her gear was not insured. She used that gear to support her family in an honest way and as much as I wish I could catch this thief and give him the beat down of a life time, the only other thing I can do is to jump in and call out for help.

I would like for anyone willing and able to help Heidi out and show her that there is still good in this world. It broke my heart to hear her in tears all day and worse than the gear being robbed, I think they stole her heart and trust with it. I feel dead inside as well and I wasn’t even the victim.

I am going to start a donation fund for Heidi to help out with replacing equipment, renting equipment for shoots until her gear is replaced or recovered, etc. I am going to personally donate $200 of my own money to get the ball rolling. Also, any sales made from my album templates for the next two weeks will all go to Heidi’s donation fund. Also, any one on one mentoring sessions that anyone signs up for during the next two weeks will also be fully donated to Heidi. For any brides out there that have been thinking about booking me, the very next wedding that books, I will donate all of your wedding package (minus the cost of any product) to Heidi to help her get back on her feet and help restore her hope. Also if you would like to just donate a dollar or two or three to my paypal account dustin@dustinizatt.com and just put For Heidi in the notes, I promise every penny of the donations will be given to Heidi.

Please join in and help out in any way you can. Please spread the word to everyone you know and if you are able to chip in, I know Heidi would greatly appreciate it. I know times are tight for everyone and I am no exception, if I had more I would give more, but every little bit helps and if we can get a lot of little bits, it will help out more than you could ever know. Thank you so much for hearing me out :)

P.S. If you gear is not insured, please get in contact with Hill and Usher to get a policy going.  It is fairly inexpensive and the coverage is awesome.  Also, please try to be more careful about leaving your gear in your cars, let’s not give anymore of our honest money and equipment to these scumsuckers. :)

October 29, 2009 - 1:52 am Aria Bethards - Thank you so much for doing this, Dustin! You are so kind and generous. I know this will spread the word and be of some help.

October 29, 2009 - 2:37 am Andrea Kelly - Dustin - what a kind and generous thing to do in order to try to help Heidi out. The kindness of the wedding photographer "family" overwhelms me sometimes.

October 29, 2009 - 2:39 am Michelle Bohman - Just posted this up on FB and will repost when the sun comes up :-) You rock Dustin!

October 29, 2009 - 6:43 am Rachael - Hey why don't you start a donation pot? I surly can't donate $200 due to our financial situation but I can do $25 or so. If a bunch of us all banned together and donated just $25-50 it might help a lot as well? Let me know...

October 29, 2009 - 9:23 am Shanda - Dustin you are one of THE KINDEST people I know! This is a horrible situation!I pray it turns out well for Heidi! You are amazingly generous person in every aspect (and your sweet wife). Did you get my text? You were super busy last night so just write me back whenev :)

October 29, 2009 - 9:26 am Mandi Nuttall - Oh I sure will! That is the sickest thing I have ever heard! Im getting all my equipment insured today!!!!! Give me until next week and I will donate for sure. I just can't believe that happened to her! If they find that dirt bag, I will help with the beat down!

October 29, 2009 - 12:35 pm Melissa Davis - Oh my GOSH! I would be heart broken! In fact, this morning as I drove with my husband to work, we were talking about the investments (in new photo gear) I've made in the past month and my thoughts turned to what in the world I'd do if it all got stolen! So I'd be happy to help out!

October 29, 2009 - 12:41 pm Kara Laws - That is just awful. I too love Heidi. I actually met her on the street near the Gateway Mall when I was in SLC for a few days. I am getting all my gear insured a.s.a.p.! I will definitely donate what I can.

October 29, 2009 - 12:45 pm Melissa Davis - I just donated Dustin! Good luck Heidi!

October 29, 2009 - 1:51 pm Ashley McFarlane - That makes me so sad for Heidi! I too help support my husband and I with my photography business and I sure could not do it with out my equipment! I know how much money, time, effort and energy goes into investing in a photography business. It makes me sick to know that fellow photographers are getting their equipment stolen. Best of luck to Heidi and thanks to you Dustin for being so sweet!

October 29, 2009 - 2:24 pm Rachael - You are the bomb Dustin! You're my favorite, thanks for being so kind! I feel so terrible for Heidi!

October 29, 2009 - 2:41 pm annie West - Dustin! God bless you! How wonderful to still have kind careing people in this world. My heart SUNK as I read this. Photography is not CHEAP. And its a huge sacrafice to buy equipment when your raising a family. Im so sad for her!!

October 29, 2009 - 3:28 pm Jessica Endicott - Wow! My sister is so lucky to have people like you in her life. Thank you everyone for your help and supporting her. Photography truely is her passion.

October 29, 2009 - 5:05 pm Brooke - This is so kind of you Dustin. I would like to help out.

October 29, 2009 - 5:16 pm Kerry Sundahl - This is so nice of you! My heart aches for Heidi. Talking to her last night just about broke my heart :-( I will definitely be donating.

October 29, 2009 - 8:29 pm Rusty - I see way too many dumb photographers (mostly girls) leave their gear unattended. If you leave your gear alone, you have no one to blame but yourself. Just because this is Utah does not mean that you are going to get a break. Welcome to the real world.

October 29, 2009 - 9:34 pm Amy Sturzenegger - That is awful news. I am so sad for her. I hope I can donate to help the cause! Thank you for sharing the story and making a way for people to donate to help her out!

October 29, 2009 - 11:04 pm Ellis Moore - Hello Dustin, Just read the blog about Heidi Walker. I would like to donate $100. How can I do it with paypal; I have bought some of your templates in the past and you helped me with starting my website, which you really did not have to. Photographers are a different breed and we understand the pain of losing equipment and customers. How can I put the $100 dollars in your paypal account for Heidi? Nothing does the heart better than "Paying It Forward".

October 29, 2009 - 11:10 pm Ellis Moore - Disregard the how to request; figured it out. The money is in your account; give my regards to Heidi.

October 30, 2009 - 12:13 am dustinizatt - Rusty, Come on man, that has to be the most shallow and careless comment ever. Heidi didn't just leave her gear laying around, some thieving bastard followed her after the temple and then busted into her car to steal the gear. If you are going to make such bold comments, why not be so bold to leave your real email address and your full name? Utah or no Utah, I am going to do everything I can to help Heidi. We all have made mistakes and I believe in Karma, what comes around goes around. I too was followed in the temple parking lot and I was lucky because I went straight home and then straight to the luncheon and took my gear with me, but it could've easily happened to me as well. Show some sympathy because if this happens to you, you won't be getting any sympathy from any of us. This is not her fault and if I had $20,000 I'd give it to her in a heart beat.

October 30, 2009 - 10:47 am Brody Dezember - This is all just crazy! For all of you that are photographers and have a lot of money into your equipment - GET INSURANCE!! - If you are working from home and are only insuring your equipment and your liability it will only be a couple of hundred bucks a year. Im sorry that this has happened and I can totally feel for her. Rusty, yes is being a d-bag, but there is some truth to what he said. We really need to watch our gear so much closer and NEVER leave it in your car even for a second. Also, just to be safe, you should always take out the CF card and put it on you when you are done shooting. Never leave it with you gear. I think we all should get together and do a sting on these guys, because we know this is not just one or 2 guys. This is a big crew. We should stake out the temple and look for photographers being followed into the parking lots and catch them red handed. Brody

October 30, 2009 - 11:02 am dustinizatt - Yes Brody, there is some truth to what Rusty said, he just could of put it in better words, lol. I second what Brody says, if any of you photographers out there don't have your gear insured, call and get it insured today. Let's all be more vigilant and take our bags with us even if we stop for a minute at the store. Also, for the past year I have started keeping every single memory card on my personage in a GoBee bag, that way in case any gear was stolen, I at least had my jobs. EVERY photographer should practice this and at least protect the images. One more thing, online backup off site ;) Brody recommended lunarpages.com to me and for a very small hosting fee, they offer you UNLIMITED online storage, so now everything is backed up on two external hard drives, a dvd, and online, that way if there was a fire or theft in my home, the images would be safe online to be recovered later. Because even though those thieving scumbags didn't get my gear, they could've easily followed me home and could break into my house and take all of my expensive mac equipment and without online storage all my pictures would be gone. Same thing if there was a fire.

October 30, 2009 - 11:03 am dustinizatt - Call Hill and Usher today and ask for Richard Reyes, tell him I sent you. The business photography policies are VERY affordable and cover you for anything under the sun.

October 30, 2009 - 2:56 pm Brody Dezember - Totally agree, Rusty could have been a bit nicer. He totally made it like it was her fault that some broke into her car and stole her stuff. Lunar pages rocks with online storage, but they are starting to get smart on it. The images on the site need to be a directly link to your website and business. Otherwise they will blacklist your site and delete your online backup. For me, its ok because I have my proofing site under the same account so they let it go. I would say that I have about 2Tbs online right now of storage and we are uploading to it constantly. All day, every day to be caught up. Brody

October 30, 2009 - 6:27 pm Brittany Cascio - Thanks for doing this for her Dustin! I am so glad to a photographer in a community like this! :) I am going to donate the money I make in my next portrait session to her fundraiser. Hope it helps! :)

October 30, 2009 - 7:56 pm Brian Beck - Seriously how hard would it be to set up a few sting operations?? Anything that I can do please let me know. Brian

October 30, 2009 - 8:17 pm Tamra Hyde - Hey Dustin. I think it's horrible what happened to Heidi! I want to help by purchasing your fotofusion templates, but for some reason a bad script keeps preventing me from purchasing them. Can you email me and let me know if there is another way to go about this? Or you can send me a paypal request. modernmother@comcast.net

October 31, 2009 - 11:05 am Jessica Rae - Wow... I am totally blow away by your generosity. Thank you for your example and love. Is there a way that we can donate some cash?

October 31, 2009 - 12:00 pm Dustin Izatt - Jessica. You can make paypal donations to Dustin@dustinizatt.com or any sales from my album templates will also be donated to Heidi. Www.dustinizatt.com/albumtemplates thanks so much :)

November 8, 2009 - 5:58 pm Kyla - That is so sad. I am with Brody, we should set up a sting operation. It seems like it could be pretty easy.
